Making a Grade: Victorian Examinations and the Rise of Standardized Testing by James Elwick
Requirements: .PDF reader, 8 MB
Overview: Starting in the 1850s achievement tests became standardized in the British Isles, and were administered on an industrial scale. By the end of the century more than two million people had written mass exams, particularly in science, technology, and mathematics. Some candidates responded to this standardization by cramming or cheating; others embraced the hope that such tests rewarded not only knowledge but also merit.

Written with humour, Making a Grade looks at how standardized testing practices quietly appeared, and then spread worldwide. This book situates mass exams, marks, and credentials in an emerging paper-based meritocracy, arguing that such exams often first appeared as “cameras” to neutrally record achievement, and then became “engines” to change education as people tailored their behaviour to fit these tests. Taking the perspectives of both examiners and examinees, Making a Grade claims that our own culture’s desire for accountability through objective testing has a long history.

The Hinge: Civil Society, Group Cultures, and the Power of Local Commitments by Gary Alan Fine
Requirements: .PDF reader, 2 MB
Overview: Most of the time, we believe our daily lives to be governed by structures determined from above: laws that dictate our behavior, companies that pay our wages, even climate patterns that determine what we eat or where we live. In contrast, social organization is often a feature of local organization. While those forces may seem beyond individual grasp, we often come together in small communities to change circumstances that would otherwise flatten us. Challenging traditional sociological models of powerful forces, in The Hinge, Gary Alan Fine emphasizes and describes those meso-level collectives, the organizations that bridge our individual interests and the larger structures that shape our lives. Focusing on “tiny publics,” he describes meso-level social collectives as “hinges”: groups that come together to pursue a shared social goal, bridging the individual and the broader society. Understanding these hinges, Fine argues, is crucial to explaining how societies function, creating links between the micro- and macro-orders of society. He draws on historical cases and fieldwork to illustrate how these hinges work and how to describe them. In The Hinge, Fine has given us powerful new theoretical tools for understanding an essential part of our social worlds.

The Armenians of Aintab: The Economics of Genocide in an Ottoman Province by Ümit (Umit) Kurt
Requirements: .PDF reader, 8 MB
Overview: A Turk’s discovery that Armenians once thrived in his hometown leads to a groundbreaking investigation into the local dynamics of genocide.

Ümit Kurt, born and raised in Gaziantep, Turkey, was astonished to learn that his hometown once had a large and active Armenian community. The Armenian presence in Aintab, the city’s name during the Ottoman period, had not only been destroyed―it had been replaced. To every appearance, Gaziantep was a typical Turkish city.

Kurt digs into the details of the Armenian dispossession that produced the homogeneously Turkish city in which he grew up. In particular, he examines the population that gained from ethnic cleansing. Records of land confiscation and population transfer demonstrate just how much new wealth became available when the prosperous Armenians―who were active in manufacturing, agricultural production, and trade―were ejected. Although the official rationale for the removal of the Armenians was that the group posed a threat of rebellion, Kurt shows that the prospect of material gain was a key motivator of support for the Armenian genocide among the local Muslim gentry and the Turkish public. Those who benefited most―provincial elites, wealthy landowners, state officials, and merchants who accumulated Armenian capital―in turn financed the nationalist movement that brought the modern Turkish republic into being. The economic elite of Aintab was thus reconstituted along both ethnic and political lines.

Instructions for installing the first time are presented below:

If you plan to flash a custom kernel, flash it AFTER installing Magisk
Make sure to remove any other root, your best bet would be restoring your boot image back to stock
Via custom recovery:
Download the latest Magisk zip file
Reboot to a custom recovery and flash the flashable zip
Reboot to system, and check whether Magisk Manager is installed and the version matches the latest one in the OP
If for some reason Magisk Manager isn’t installed/upgraded automatically, please install/upgrade it manually!
Via Magisk Manager (Only support v14.0+):
This method does not need root, and also does not require a custom recovery.
However, you MUST have a stock boot image dump beforehand, and you also have to be able to flash the patched boot image, either through fastboot/download mode or ODIN
Install the latest Magisk Manager
If you’re planning to flash the patched boot image through ODIN, go to Settings > Update Settings > Patched Boot Output Format, and select .img.tar. For normal users leave it as the default .img
Press Install > Install > Patch Boot Image File, and select your stock boot image file
Magisk Manager will now patch your boot image, and store it in [Internal Storage]/MagiskManager/patched_boot.img[.tar]
Copy the patched boot image to your PC. If you can’t find it via MTP, you can pull the file with ADB:
adb pull /sdcard/MagiskManager/patched_boot.img[.tar]
Flash the patched boot image to your device and reboot. Here is the command if using fastboot:
fastboot flash boot /path/to/patched_boot.img

The Blood of Caged Birds by J. M. Stredwick (Mortalsong Trilogy 1)
Requirements: .ePUB reader, 311 kb
Overview: A love reborn with each life.

An ancient cabal in search of immortality.

A flaw in the human design.

And her blood is the cost they are willing to pay.

France, 1690.

Giselle has always been the silent one in their home—passive and depressed as she lives each day, never longing for more.

She doesn’t question it. Not until fate arrives at her doorstep.

Her sister Claire has returned home, unmarried. Regardless of her wayward status, their father hosts a celebration for her return, taking only a moment away from his Merchant Shipping Company to attend to his daughters.

It is within this celebration that Giselle meets Benjamin, a man who seems to hold all the secrets of the world in his eyes. Then she feels it, a thawing of the freeze in her heart and soul.

Beyond the simple world of mantua gowns, lusting men, and the social elite, a world of dark magic abounds. The head of an ancient cabal continues to search for the one whose blood could be the key to immortality: hers.

It is in this juxtaposition of love and sacrifice that their world collides, and it is here that Giselle and Benjamin may lose everything in the wake of an ancient darkness that follows them through time.
