Overview: St. Louis, July 2082
How had it come to this? The discovery on the Moon had brought such excitement and promise; now it had a mind of its own, which Eric and Allie had helped to create. The survival of the President of the United Tri-American States and possibly the world was now depending on them to undo what had been so carelessly done. It would be a one-time shot.
So, with his heart pounding, Eric launched the ancient Harley Davidson motorcycle from their hiding place in the debris-filled alley. He jumped the curb and dodged the security detail retreating away from the pulsating dome. As they passed, one member of the detail drew his pistol and yelled, “HALT, by order of Homeland Security!” When Eric ignored the order, the man fired a shot, and then continued running with the others. Eric was knocked forward when the bullet impacted his backpack. Something inside had stopped the slug. He prayed it wasn’t the titanium box.
The holographic dome over the PARADISE Theme Park had morphed into reality just before devouring five square kilometers of St. Louis. Allison straddled the fuel cell cover in front and gripped the inner sections of the handlebars. Eric watched the speedometer; any impact with the dome much above or below thirty one kilometers per hour could be deadly.
With a light rain falling Eric locked the throttle at thirty one and released the right hand grip. He reached inside his shirt and located the small glass-encased flask containing one microgram of hybrid-antimatter. One firm jerk broke the leather strap from around his neck. He then pressed the blunt end against his chest to arm the embedded spring. Thirty meters from the dome he rechecked his speed and stood up on the foot rests. Allie closed her eyes and prayed. Eric leaned forward, covered her with his body and stretched his right arm straight out over the handlebars. Three seconds before impact he released the left handgrip and wrapped his arm tightly around Allie.
He pointed the narrow end of the flask toward the dome with the spring trigger firmly against his palm. When the front tire impacted the wall it exploded and the motorcycle began to disintegrate. Instinctively, Eric closed his eyes. The impact activated the spring in the base of the flask, shooting it into the pulsating wall of cloud-like material. The glass case shattered, releasing its contents. A tenth of a second later Eric and Allie followed, disappearing through the dome wall.
Eric was blinded by the intense brightness and he heard Allie cry out from the heat that now engulfed them. Had the Japanese scientists miscalculated? Were Eric and Allie in the process of dying? If he had failed, there would be nothing to stop the Zurelleum-based dome from eventually encircling the Earth.
A half-second later they impacted a hot flat surface and tumbled to a stop. Eric was not prepared for the impact from behind. The pain was instant and almost rendered him unconsciousness. Allie sounded in a panic when he heard her voice, “Eric? Eric! Where are we?!”
Eric was trying to spit the sand out of his mouth. When he finally sat up and looked around he was speechless. For miles in every direction there was nothing…but desert.
