Connie Barrera Thriller series by C.L.R. (Charles) Dougherty (#00,2~4,7~8)
Requirements: ePUB Reader, 2.9MB | Retail
Overview: The Connie Barrera Thrillers have the same elements of action and adventure found in Dougherty’s Bluewater Thrillers, tempered by Connie’s more mature and somewhat romantic perspective. The two series present different perspectives on similar adventures in the Caribbean yachting world, and characters inevitably cross over from one series to the other.
Connie Barrera first appeared in Dougherty’s first novel, Deception in Savannah. She had a rough start in life and she was a little shady, but she had some admirable traits. By the end of her first role, she had moved from a would-be extortionist to working with the police to put away a murdering mobster.
When she accidentally came into a little money, she found herself with enough leisure to enjoy life for the first time in her 30-odd years. Trouble found her as she was at another of life’s crossroads, and she escaped by chartering a yacht. She went on to play a starring role in two of the Bluewater Thrillers and became friends with Dani Berger and Liz Chirac, the protagonists in the series.
Genre: Fiction | Mystery/Thriller
#00. Deception in Savannah
Connie Barrera is ready to move on. She’s the business partner and mistress of a married doctor who runs a weight loss clinic, but she wants out. He’s not willing to buy her shares, so she resorts to extortion. The doctor has recently killed a pedestrian in a hit-and-run accident to which the only witness other than Connie is a street hustler with attention deficit disorder and a photographic memory.
Connie threatens to disclose the doctor’s role in the accident, jeopardizing the thriving clinic. Unbeknownst to Connie, their major investor is the local drug kingpin who is confused by the antics of Connie and her alcohol-addled lawyer. The mobster decides that his empire is under attack by an unknown rival. His lethal attempts to eliminate the threat are frustrated by chance and the incompetence of his subordinates. The police finally find the somewhat puzzled eyewitness who eventually recalls his clear but misplaced memory of the accident, and everyone’s plans begin to unravel.
#2. Sailor’s Delight
Connie and her First Mate and fiancé, Paul Russo, have just completed their first charter. Paul has been back in Miami for a few days, dealing with the sale of his condo there, leaving Connie aboard her yacht, Diamantista, in Grenada. She’s getting the boat ready for their next guests, who arrive tomorrow, and fantasizing about Paul’s return this evening. While putting away their laundry, she finds an unexpected reminder of one of their last guests, stashed in Paul’s drawer. The lusty young widow hadn’t been able to keep her hands off him, but now Connie wonders if he’d been encouraging her advances. Beset by pangs of jealousy, she’s hurt and angry. Knowing that she won’t be able to resolve this with Paul before their guests come aboard, she does her best to suppress her feelings, but Paul can tell something’s wrong.
#3. A Blast to Sail
The yacht Diamantista II is as stunning as her captain, Connie Barrera. Both attract attention everywhere they go. Having just taken delivery of Diamantista II, Connie and her fiancé, Paul Russo, are on a shakedown cruise when trouble begins. Connie and Paul are working to develop a summer charter business in the northeastern U.S. when they run afoul of a terrorist plot. The terrorists plan to use Diamantista II as the delivery vehicle for a nuclear weapon, but they underestimate Connie and Paul.
#4. Storm Sail
What’s the worst that can happen when a sailing yacht sets out to cross 1,600 miles of open ocean?
Connie Barrera and her fiancé, Paul Russo, were in high spirits when they left Annapolis. All their friends would be in Martinique to celebrate their arrival. Their marriage there would be a fitting end for Diamantista II’s first offshore passage.
Their voyage takes a dangerous turn when Hurricane Ian springs to life in their path. Being caught in an unpredicted hurricane tests their seamanship, but there are worse things to come.
#7. Under Full Sail
When Connie and Paul find an amnesia victim stranded on a deserted island, their vacation is spoiled. They were excited about exploring the isolated spot by themselves until the castaway appeared. Who is he? How did he get there? Will he recover his memory? He can’t answer their questions, but he needs their help. How he got to Isla de Aves is a mystery. Connie and Paul invite him aboard their charter yacht and sail to Dominica seeking medical attention for him. As snatches of his memory return, he recalls having spent time in St. Lucia. When they take him there, hoping it will stimulate his memory, the trouble begins. Why are people trying to kidnap him? And who’s trying to kill him?
#8. An Easy Sail
Connie Barrera is a dangerous woman. She’s running a cartel that smuggles drugs into Florida and Europe. At least, that’s the rumor in the Caribbean. She’s fed that rumor over the years, but now she regrets it. Guillermo Montalba is a ruthless gangster with connections to a wealthy U.S. Senator. Montalba views Connie as a threat. An astute businessman, he would prefer to make Connie his partner. If he fails at that, he’s ready to go to war. All Connie wants is an easy sail. Montalba is in her way. He’s in for a surprise. He’s going to discover the truth about Connie – she always gets what she wants. But who is the man with the scarred face? Join Connie on her yacht as she solves the mystery.
