Samurai Invasion: Japan’s Korean War 1592 -1598 by Stephen Turnbull
Requirements: EPUB, MOBI Reader, 55 MB
Overview: It’s an extraordinary tale, largely untold–until now. Researched in both Japanese and Korean archives, and authored by the world’s most acclaimed historian of the Samurai period, here is the most complete account yet written of Japan’s two invasions of Korea. It includes, among other treasures, never-before seen Japanese illustrations and battle reports. By the end of the 16th century, the Samurai had taken total control of their own domestic territory and looked abroad for new lands to conquer. The ultimate target was China, but Korea was to provide the jumping-off point to that victory. The incursion marked the first time the Samurai had attacked another country, and at first the Koreans drove them away. Retribution was inevitable, and the Japanese returned in 1597 to wreak havoc in a war of unbelievable savagery. With extracts from contemporary Japanese field diaries not seen for over 400 years, this is a volume no follower of Samurai lore can resist. The invasions of Korea launched by the dictator Toyotomi Hideyoshi (1592-1593 and 1597-1598) are unique in Japanese history for being the only time that the samurai assaulted a foreign country. Hideyoshi planned to invade and conquer China, ruled at the time by the Ming dynasty, and when the Korean court refused to allow his troops to cross their country, Korea became the first step in this ambitious plan of conquest.

Download Arsonist by Nathan Allen (.MOBI)

Arsonist: The Most Dangerous Man in America by Nathan Allen
Requirements: MOBI Reader, 895 KB
Overview: In this landmark work of history, Arsonist reveals the secret role of one man who challenged the foundations of feudalism and instigated the American Revolution. James Otis was disgusted by the anti-democratic feudal structure of society and threatened to set it all “in a flame” though, he confessed, he too would likely be consumed in the fire. By the winter of 1760, this provincial bourgeoisie, one of the wealthiest and most intelligent men in the British colonies, had become fully radicalized. That his words – a promise and a prophecy – came to full fruition and his predictions about the province and his own life were entirely accurate would be unbelievable if it didn’t actually happen. After an analysis of colonial political, social, legal and religious evolution prior to Otis’s threat, Arsonist provides a detailed, lively illumination of the issues and personalities involved in overthrowing the local government of the world’s greatest empire. A group of largely forgotten men Otis, Sam Adams, Oxenbridge Thatcher, Jonathan Mayhew, Thomas Cushing, Patrick Henry – conceived the new country, after which men such as Washington, Jefferson, Madison, and Hamilton midwifed it. The conception of the new nation, so vital yet so ignored, occurred in the violent though fertile grounds of Boston and Virginia in the 1760s. And no one was so instrumental to that conception as James Otis, Jr., the forgotten infantry soldier who made the general’s glory possible.

Insight into a Hungarian Jewish family in Britain in the 1940s. Although they had been living in England since 1936, John and Andrew Forbat’s Hungarian family became Enemy Aliens at the onset of WWII. Aged 11 and 14, the two brothers were evacuated to a disadvantaged part of Melksham in Wiltshire, to find themselves in straitened circumstances, cut off and far from home. Their many letters home throughout the war, with details of their schooling, bullying, friendships and constant pursuit of more pocket money, form a humorous and at times tragic testament to the hardships of war. Interspersed with diary entries made by the boys’ father back home in Blitz-torn London and further recollections from the younger brother John, Evacuee Boys is as full a record of war-torn Britain as one family could provide.
