Kinderland by Liliana Corobca, Translated by Monica Cure
Requirements: .ePUB readers, 2.4 MB | Retail
Overview: From the author of the award-winning The Censor’s Notebook, a novel about children whose parents have departed for employment in foreign lands, told through the perspective of a young girl who is responsible for her two brothers.

With her parents gone in search of work, twelve-year-old Cristina must act as a mother to her two younger brothers. Through her eyes, we experience the feeling of wonderment and loneliness as they roam the streets of a contemporary Moldovan village. Her mother has gone to Italy, her father to Siberia, and the children grow up fast, imitating the gestures of the absent adults, and chasing their fading memories of normal family life.

Kinderland is the second novel by Moldovan novelist Liliana Corobca to be translated into English. The first was The Censor’s Notebook (2022), which won the prestigious Oxford-Weidenfeld Translation Prize 2023, remarkably so since it was also the translator, Monica Cure’s, first attempt at a book-length translation. Kinderland showcases Corobca’s signature ability to present grimness in a way that is also so full of life and a love of people, and a kind of curiosity that’s gentle and forgiving of people’s strangeness.

Daughters of Muscadine by Monic Ductan
Requirements: .ePUB readers, 1.1 MB | Retail
Overview: Two events tie together the nine stories in Monic Ductan’s gorgeous debut: the 1920s lynching of Ida Pearl Crawley and the 1980s drowning of a high school basketball player, Lucy Boudreaux. Both forever shape the people and the place of Muscadine, Georgia, in the foothills of Appalachia.

The daughters of Muscadine are Black southern women who are, at times, outcasts due to their race and are also estranged from those they love. A remorseful woman tries to connect with the child she gave up for adoption; another, immersed in loneliness, attempts to connect with a violent felon. Two sisters love each other deeply even when they cannot understand one another. A little girl witnessing her father’s slow death realizes her own power and lack thereof. A single woman weathers the excitement—and rigors—of online dating.

Covering the last one hundred years, these are stories of people whose voices have been suppressed and erased for too long: Black women, rural women, Appalachian women, and working-class women. Ductan presents the extraordinary nature of everyday lives in the tradition of Alice Walker, Deesha Philyaw, James McBride, and Dorothy Allison in an engaging, engrossing, and exciting new voice.

Wrong Way by Joanne McNeil
Requirements: .ePUB readers, 568 KB | Retail
Overview: For years, Teresa has passed from one job to the next, settling into long stretches of time, struggling to build her career in any field or unstick herself from an endless cycle of labor. The dreaded move from one gig to another is starting to feel unbearable. When a recruiter connects her with a contract position at AllOver, it appears to check all her prerequisites for a “good” job. It’s a fintech corporation with progressive hiring policies and a social justice-minded mission statement. Their new service for premium members: a functional fleet of driverless cars. The future of transportation. As her new-hire orientation reveals, the distance between AllOver’s claims and its actions is wide, but the lure of financial stability and a flexible schedule is enough to keep Teresa driving forward.

Joanne McNeil, who often reports on how the human experience intersects with labor and technology brings blazing compassion and criticism to Wrong Way, examining the treacherous gaps between the working and middle classes wrought by the age of AI. Within these divides, McNeil turns the unsaid into the unignorable, and captures the existential perils imposed by a nonstop, full-service gig economy.

Yehuda Amichai: A Life of Poetry, 1948-94 by Yehuda Amichai
Requirements: .PDF reader, 10 mb
Overview: Yehuda Amichai is widely considered to be the most prominent poet of Israel, and certainly the best known Hebrew poet internationally. A Life of Poetry is an appropriately comprehensive and timely evaluation of the body of work of one of our most valuable poets in any language.

Employing the style and idiom of a post-Modernist— of a twentieth-century artist—and filtering it through the prism of his Israeli and Jewish sensibilities, Amichai’s work is cosmopolitan, muscular, and ironic. Resounding with the exhilaration of the human drama—love, loss, death, war, eroticism, and the density of experience in human encounters—it is brought into sharper contrast by the ever-present precariousness of Israeli existence. The burden and legacy of this history, and its impact upon modern, secular society, places Amichai’s work within a uniquely Israeli landscape—arid, verdant, cruel, and beautiful—while simultaneously transcending national and religious borders. His language resonates with biblical and sacramental allusion, but his thematic power lies in the depiction of an essential human sensibility.
